Is Twitter taking the place of mobile marketing? The short answer is NO!  Not by a long shot.  I will list 5 major difference between Twitter and Mobile Marketing and then let you decide.

1. If you look at the Twitter radar last month their was a user data base of 20 million people on twitter.   Last month there was 157 Million users subscribed and sending SMS text messages.  In the marketing world the return on 157 million vs. 20 million is huge.

2. Mobile vs. CPU?  Just as a reminder to most mobile users who have an account with twitter, you should know that the default setting is to not send SMS messages.  What does this mean?  Out of that 20 million half of them don’t even have their twitter account forward to their phone.  Pocket marketing is the most personal and engaging form of marketing.  DID I SAY ENGAGING?

3. Twitter can’t  bring prospect / consumer interaction like an SMS Text Message.  SMS can provide polls, voting, trivia, Text2Win and brand engagement not just SPAM to phone.  Twitter is quickly turning into spam and people are opting out of the twitter community.

4. Tracking is a huge key to measure the success of your companies media.  A business can track marketing materials with keywords and promo codes within SMS Messages.  This  will give them the opportunity to see where their marketing dollars are wasted and helps them spend money where their marketing is effective.  Twitter is a status update, there is ZERO tracking method for tweets.

5.  Twitter is Twitter.  SMS Marketing gives you the ability to take advantage of mobile marketing agencies for guidance to complete a quality, creative, successful campaign.  Mobile Marketing professionals know what consumers want and the trends to create a high level of engagement with your audience.

Ryan Nelson: SMS is still more engaging than a Tweet.  After I receive 500 Tweet in a day, I don’t care anymore.   I subscribe to a SMS campaign for the Houston Dynamo… I like the Dynamo, I subscribe and I will read it because I am a qualified consumer, interested in the Dynamo enough to opt-in to the mobile club.  The Dynamo will not waste time and money when sending a SMS messages to my phone.  I have purchased 4 tickets this season because they reminded me of home games.
